Exercise 1

How does the article use graphics to help convey the theme of the article?

Answer: In Nate Silver's piece, he uses relatively clear graphics that display his data in a way in which readers who are not familiar with reading data sets can find patterns and outliers (if any exist) in his graphics. This is especially present in his graphic called "Police Locals" which shows percentages on the top of the graph from 0-100% (living in the city they protect) and readers are thus able to see how far or close to either end of the spectrum these officers are to either living or not living in the city they protect. Readers immediately see that, from this data, many officers do not live in the city they are supposed to protect and also are able to see the racial divide whereas non-white officers more often than white officers live in the city they protect. All of this furthers Silver's theme of Ferguson and what it means when police do not reside in the city they are meant to protect (i.e, lack of community outreach/knowledge of the community leads to violence/miscommunication etc.).

Exercise 3

What stands out to you from a social perspective? Try to keep the focus on the numbers presented in the article and not on personal opinions you may have about the topic.

Answer: I find it interesting that the data shown in the first scatter graph reveals that the most liberal cities have the lowest percentage of officers, regardless of ethnicity, that live in the city they are assigned to.

Exercise 9

What stands out to you as you look over the data? What social concerns does this data raise for you?

Answer: It was surprising to see the comparison between police officers who are white and live inside the city limits and police officers who are part of a minority group. This can raise the social concern of minority groups living in certain areas where poverty is high compared to areas where more white people are living. This article helps point out the concern for racial disparity.

  • First create a new folder called lab2 in your LastnameFirstname folder by clicking the New Folder button in the Files tab in the lower right of RStudio
  • To obtain the lab, copy the following R code into the Console:

              to = "/home/EMAIL/LastnameFirstname/lab2")

    where EMAIL is your Pacific email (mine is isma5720@pacificu.edu) and LastnameFirstname is where you have shared your RStudio project with me (mine is IsmayChester).

  • You now can work on the lab2.Rmd file and save your results there.
  • You'll only turn in one lab per your group/partners. Tell me on Monday during class who is your partner and where Lab 2 will be located.
